Rumiko Takahashi, the creator behind legendary series like Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2, is returning to the anime spotlight as her ongoing manga MAO officially gets a TV adaptation. Announced for Spring 2026, the series will be animated by studio SUNRISE, known for its work on iconic anime, including the original Inuyasha series. The new anime was announced alongside a teaser visual, an official trailer, and voice cast confirmations that have excited long-time fans of Takahashi’s work.

MAO follows a mysterious onmyoji named Mao who has lived for nine centuries and a modern-day schoolgirl, Nanoka Kiba, who is suddenly transported to Japan’s Taisho era after a sinkhole accident. There, she meets Mao, and the two become partners in investigating supernatural events that tie into an ancient curse. With a tone reminiscent of Inuyasha but set against a darker, more enigmatic backdrop, MAO promises a blend of mystery, time travel, and spiritual combat.

Leading the voice cast is Yuki Kaji, who takes on the role of Mao. Known for voicing iconic characters like Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan, Kaji expressed his gratitude and excitement about working on a Takahashi project, noting that the anime has been in the works for years and has been treated with immense care by the production team. Natsumi Kawaida joins as Nanoka Kiba, bringing a grounded energy to the curious and brave protagonist. Hiro Shimono voices the eccentric Hyakka, while Toshiyuki Toyonaga returns as Kamon, continuing a role he first took on during the manga’s promotional videos.

All four main cast members shared heartfelt messages, highlighting their connection to the characters and their appreciation for being part of such a beloved creator’s world. Their words echoed the enthusiasm shared by fans online, many of whom have been following the manga since its serialization began in Weekly Shonen Sunday back in 2019.

The anime will be helmed by director Teruo Sato, with series composition by Yuko Kakihara and character designs handled by Yoshihito Hishinuma, who also serves as the chief animation director. The art direction is in the hands of Hiroshi Kato and Izumi Hoki, with Masumi Otsuka in charge of color design. The music will be composed by Shu Kanematsu, adding to the show’s atmospheric depth.

SUNRISE, with its reputation for high-quality animation and storytelling, is teaming up with a newly energized team to bring MAO to life. The announcement also arrives at a time when Takahashi’s classic titles are enjoying renewed success, including the reboot of Urusei Yatsura, which recently concluded its updated run, and Ranma 1/2, whose second season is set to premiere later this year.

With its compelling premise, experienced cast and crew, and the legacy of Rumiko Takahashi behind it, MAO is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated anime releases of 2026.
