Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have reason to celebrate as co-creator Bryan Konietzko has shared new details about the upcoming feature film The Legend of Aang. The movie, set for release on October 9, 2026, will follow Aang and his friends as young adults, several years after the events of the original animated series.
The announcement came during a special 20th-anniversary panel at New York Comic Con, which featured Konietzko alongside the voices of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko — Dante Basco, Mae Whitman, Jack De Sena, Michaela Jill Murphy, and Zach Tyler Eisen.
Bryan Konietzko’s Exciting Tease for Fans

During the panel, Konietzko expressed his excitement about the progress of the new movie, describing it as “incredibly beautiful.” While he could not share visuals or plot details, he praised the team working on the project, including director Lauren Montgomery — a key creative force behind The Legend of Korra.
“In almost exactly a year, we have our feature animated film,” Konietzko said. “Directed by Avatar veteran Lauren Montgomery and a bunch of other incredible folks, they are working so hard right now. I can’t show you anything yet, but I can promise you it’s going to be worth the wait.”
His comments immediately reignited anticipation among fans who have been waiting for a faithful continuation of the original animated universe after years of mixed reactions to live-action adaptations.
Returning to the World of Aang
The Legend of Aang will be the first major animated movie from Avatar Studios, the division established by Nickelodeon to expand the Avatar universe. The film is expected to explore the characters’ adult lives as they shape a world still healing from war and rediscover what balance means in a new era.
Lauren Montgomery’s involvement gives fans hope for an authentic continuation that preserves the soul of the original. Her previous work on The Legend of Korra and several DC animated films has been praised for both visual style and emotional depth.
A Legacy That Keeps Growing

The Avatar: The Last Airbender series, which originally aired from 2005 to 2008, remains one of the most acclaimed animated shows ever created, blending action, humor, and deep philosophy. Its influence has only grown over the years, inspiring countless creators and spawning successful spin-offs, novels, and comics.
Despite the live-action remake’s divided reception, the Avatar fandom remains one of the most passionate in the world. Konietzko’s reassurance about The Legend of Aang being “a love letter to the original” has reignited optimism across social media, with fans expressing excitement for what could be the franchise’s grandest chapter yet.
With only a year left until release, the anticipation continues to build. If Konietzko’s words are any indication, The Legend of Aang may not only honor the legacy of the original series but also reimagine it for a new generation of fans.
