A live action adaptation of WIND BREAKER, based on Satoru Nii’s hit manga, has officially been announced following the season two finale of the anime. The movie will debut in theaters in December 2025, bringing a fresh cinematic take on the action packed story of Furin High to life. With a teaser trailer and poster now out, the excitement around this adaptation is growing fast.
The film was shot entirely in Okinawa between February and April this year, marking a two month production window that stayed true to the vibrant and raw energy of the original. Leading the project is Kentaro Hagiwara, who previously directed Blue Period and Our 30 Minute Sessions. He is joined by screenwriter Yosuke Masaike, whose award winning work in Anime Supremacy! earned him the Japan Academy Prize. Together, they aim to bring WIND BREAKER to a broader audience while staying emotionally rooted in the story’s powerful themes of friendship and resilience.
What sets this adaptation apart is that it includes original material developed in direct collaboration with Satoru Nii, the manga’s creator. This ensures the film remains loyal to the spirit of the source material while introducing new plot elements and character dynamics crafted specifically for the big screen. According to the creative team, this is not just a rehash of the manga’s pages, but a bold reimagining for cinema that offers longtime fans and newcomers alike a new lens into the world of Furin High.
Director Hagiwara described the film as a challenge to the outdated image of the classic “yankee” film. Rather than reinforcing old school tropes, he wants to use the film’s violent and emotional canvas to pose deeper questions about modern youth, identity, and emotional release. His intention is to reconstruct the genre into something hopeful and socially aware, driven by passionate performances from a fresh young cast.
Screenwriter Masaike emphasized his goal to highlight the personalities of every character, filling the script with powerful, memorable moments. Through collaborative sessions with Nii himself, new scenes were written to enhance the emotional weight and cinematic potential of the story. He called the project a new kind of yankee film, one that might reach the very top of the genre’s possibilities.
Producer Yoshitaka Kamo added that it was the emotional heart of WIND BREAKER that inspired him to pursue the live action project. The story’s portrayal of friendship as a force capable of breaking through isolation and inner turmoil became the foundational message for the adaptation. For Kamo, the story resonates because everyone knows what it feels like to be alone. What makes this series unforgettable is its belief that meaningful bonds can overcome even the darkest struggles.
Since its debut on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform in January 2021, WIND BREAKER has captured a loyal fanbase and grown into one of the most talked about manga of its generation. With 22 volumes published as of June 2025 and a successful anime adaptation by CloverWorks spanning two seasons, the property has firmly cemented its place in modern anime and manga culture.
Now, with the live action film on the horizon, WIND BREAKER is ready to make its mark on cinema as well. The teaser alone has sparked widespread conversation, and fans are eager to see how the story's intense fights and emotional layers will translate to the big screen. This December promises more than just action it promises a reimagined vision of one of the most gripping youth stories in recent manga history.
