Studio 4°C is diving deep into uncharted waters with its newest feature film ChaO, an animated romantic comedy that blends futuristic fantasy with heartfelt emotion. The highly anticipated movie is officially set to release in Japanese theaters on August 15, and fans can now get a closer look thanks to a newly dropped main trailer and key poster visual.

The project is helmed by acclaimed director Yasuhiro Aoki, best known for his work on Batman: Gotham Knight and Kimagure Robot. Aoki brings his signature visual flair and emotional storytelling to ChaO, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience. Character design and chief animation duties are handled by Hirokazu Kojima, whose past credits include Deadman Wonderland and Coyote Ragtime Show. The vibrant and surreal visuals are further enhanced by art director Hiroshi Takiguchi, who previously worked on Weathering With You and Children of the Sea.

Distribution in Japan will be managed by TOEI, while GKIDS has secured the North American rights and will premiere the film globally next week at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

ChaO tells the story of Stephen, an ordinary office worker at a shipbuilding firm who unexpectedly finds himself entangled in the most bizarre situation of his life. His routine world turns upside down when Chao, a princess from an underwater mermaid kingdom, proposes to him out of nowhere. With barely any time to process what is happening, Stephen is swept into a whirlwind of confusion, laughter, and surprising tenderness as he begins living under the same roof with the unpredictable and full hearted Chao.

What unfolds is a charming tale of love and emotional awakening, as Chao’s sincerity gradually chips away at Stephen’s emotional walls. The story weaves together humor, culture clash, and romantic warmth, making it not just a fantastical journey but one grounded in real emotional growth.

The film’s voice cast brings together some standout talents. Anna Yamada leads as Chao, joined by Oji Suzuka as Stephen. Supporting voices include Cookie as Ambassador Omede, Anna Tsuchiya as the Editor in Chief, Shunsei Ota as Juno, Kenta Miyake as King Neptune, Kavka Shishido as Maibei, Yuichiro Umehara as Robert, and Ryota Yamasato as Sea President.

The new key visual captures the colorful essence of ChaO’s underwater fantasy setting and offers a glimpse into the vibrant, otherworldly life viewers can expect.

With its imaginative premise, rich animation, and emotional depth, ChaO is shaping up to be one of Studio 4°C’s most memorable films in years. It is not just a romantic comedy but a heartfelt tale that explores vulnerability, identity, and the unexpected ways love can bloom even in the most unfamiliar places.
