The fur is about to fly as Nyaight of the Living Cat, a wild horror comedy anime, is all set to claw its way onto screens starting July 6. The upcoming series has dropped a brand new trailer, a vivid key visual, and revealed an expanded voice cast. Produced by Studio OLM, known for titles like Komi Can’t Communicate, the show promises a bizarre but irresistible take on a world overrun by cats.
Directed by Tomohiro Kamitani, with legendary filmmaker Takashi Miike serving as executive director, the series is poised to be one of the quirkiest entries of the summer. Nyaight of the Living Cat will stream on Crunchyroll globally, giving cat lovers and horror enthusiasts something they didn’t know they needed.
The opening theme “CAT CITY” will be performed by iconic rock band THE YELLOW MONKEY, while the ending track “Matatabi” is brought to life by WANIMA. Both songs carry the chaotic yet oddly heartfelt energy of the show, with contributions from music heavyweights like composer Koji Endo, guitarist Marty Friedman, and vocalist Heidi Shepherd, who delivers a punch of intensity with her death voice performance.
The anime is set in a world where a mysterious virus has turned most of the human population into cats. But these aren’t just any cats. They’re dangerously cuddly, and all it takes is one snuggle for a human to join their ranks. At the center of this madness is Kunagi, a young man with an encyclopedic knowledge of felines but no memory of his own past. As he navigates this purring apocalypse, Kunagi must resist the overwhelming temptation to cuddle while trying to survive with his humanity intact.
Nyaight of the Living Cat has also been invited to two major festivals. A special screening of episode one will take place on July 3 at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, hosted by Crunchyroll. Additionally, episodes three and four will premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal between July 16 and August 3, before their official streaming release.
The voice cast is packed with talent, including Masaaki Mizunaka as Kunagi and Reina Ueda as Kaoru, alongside a long list of celebrated names such as Subaru Kimura, Ryota Takeuchi, Tomoko Miyadera, and Tessho Genda. The ensemble promises to bring a balance of comedy, chaos, and warmth to a story that is as bizarre as it is endearing.
The original manga, written by Hawkman and illustrated by Mecha Roots, debuted in Mag Garden’s Monthly Comic Garden in 2020. It has been a sleeper hit, with six volumes published as of early 2025. The English version is licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment, who describe it as a mix of horror and heart that asks one crucial question how long can you resist a cat when the fate of humanity depends on it?
As fans gear up for what might be the most delightfully strange anime of the season, one thing is clear. Cuddles have never been more dangerous.
