Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is turning thirty, and the celebration is as epic as the series itself. During the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, Bandai Namco brought the nostalgia and the surprises to fans old and new with an anniversary showcase that revisited the legendary franchise and also looked ahead to what’s next.
The event, titled “GUNDAM Showcase – Featuring 30 Years of Gundam Wing,” was one of the major anime highlights of Comic-Con this year. It kicked off with the unveiling of fresh artwork inspired by the show’s iconic eye-catch scenes, instantly drawing cheers from long-time followers. But the centerpiece was a brand-new anniversary video titled Mobile Suit Gundam Wing – Operation 30th – which premiered on the official GundamInfo YouTube channel. Directed by Toru Iwasawa, the video brought back the spirit of the original series with a tribute that was both emotionally resonant and visually striking.
Perhaps the biggest announcement was the launch of a brand-new manga set between the events of Endless Waltz and Frozen Teardrop. Written by Katsuyuki Sumizawa and illustrated by Sakura Asagi, the manga continues the saga in a way that bridges timelines and enriches character arcs. The first chapter is already available online, offering fans an exciting continuation that expands the universe with fresh storytelling and art.
Fans of Gundam movies were also thrilled by the announcement that Endless Waltz will be returning to theaters in both Japan and North America later this year. This move allows audiences to re-experience the emotional power and stunning animation of the beloved film on the big screen. It is a rare opportunity for newer fans to see one of Gundam’s most memorable entries in its full cinematic glory.
Adding more excitement, the new video includes a brief visual teaser that hints at Frozen Teardrop. While there is no official confirmation of a full adaptation, the tease suggests that the Gundam Wing universe might still have more stories to tell in the near future.
Gundam Wing first aired in 1995 and quickly became one of the most influential entries in the entire Gundam franchise. Its arrival on Western television through Toonami introduced an entire generation to mecha anime, and its blend of political drama, personal conflict, and philosophical depth has ensured its place in anime history.
The 30th anniversary celebration is not just a look back but also a sign of Gundam’s enduring legacy and its ability to evolve while staying true to its roots. With more events and releases planned for other Gundam titles, including the upcoming tenth anniversary of Iron-Blooded Orphans, the Gundam universe continues to stay active, relevant, and deeply loved.
