Fans of retro anime are in for a treat as AnimEigo has officially announced the Blu-ray release of Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01, scheduled for September 16, 2025. Originally released in 1987 and directed by Shinji Aramaki, the 41-minute OVA will now be available in a high-quality, region-free Blu-ray edition that includes a host of extras.
A Classic Returns in High Definition
Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 is considered a cult classic in the mecha genre. The new Blu-ray edition comes with 1080p video, both Japanese and English LPCM 2.0 audio tracks, and English subtitles, including SDH options. In addition to the reauthored main feature, fans can enjoy exclusive content such as director commentary tracks, cast interviews, art galleries, redesigned menus, and the “Weapons of MADOX” featurette, which highlights real-life Japan Self-Defense Force technology.
The Story of MADOX-01
The OVA follows a college student, Koji Sugimoto, who accidentally ends up inside the prototype battle-suit MADOX-01 after it falls into his possession. With no idea how to control the powerful machine, Koji inadvertently sets off chaos in downtown Tokyo. Meanwhile, Lt. Kilgore, humiliated during earlier tests of the suit, sees this as his chance to get even, while ace pilot Kusumoto Elle steps in with a second prototype to prevent total destruction. The story mixes action, humor, and sci-fi spectacle in a short but intense package that has delighted fans for decades.
Historical Significance
This title holds a special place in anime history as MADOX-01 was AnimEigo’s very first license for Western release back in 1989, helping to introduce Japanese OVAs to international audiences at a time when they were still largely unknown outside Japan. Over the years, it became a staple recommendation for fans of 80s mecha anime, with different English dubs released in both the United States and the UK.
Shinji Aramaki’s Legacy
Director Shinji Aramaki later became a renowned figure in the anime industry, known for major projects such as Appleseed, Harlock: Space Pirate, Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045, and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. For many fans, MADOX-01 stands as an early glimpse into the visionary mechanical designs and storytelling style that would define his career.

The Blu-ray release of Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 is priced at $17.99 and is now available for pre-order through MediaOCD. With its combination of nostalgic value, bonus content, and polished video and audio quality, it offers both longtime fans and newcomers a chance to revisit this influential piece of anime history.
