After a mixed reception to its first two episodes, Lord of Mysteries returns with a stronger and more coherent third chapter. Titled The Notebook, this latest installment focuses on the unfolding mystery around the Antigonus family's artifact while refining its pacing and character moments. Airing on July 5, 2025, and produced by B.CMAY PICTURES, the episode continues the anime adaptation of the popular web novel by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, and this time, manages to strike a better narrative rhythm.
Episode 3 opens on an intense note, immediately diving into the interrogation of a member from the Secret Order. This scene not only reintroduces Dunn Smith and Leonard Mitchell as formidable operatives but also hints at the deeper forces surrounding the Antigonus artifact. The storytelling feels tighter and more grounded in this episode. Unlike the earlier parts that rushed through source material, this one takes a more deliberate approach, allowing viewers to process the events and Klein Moretti’s internal evolution without feeling overwhelmed.
The highlight of the episode is undoubtedly Klein’s increasing involvement in the investigation. His Divination attempts to locate Ray Bieber, the son of a deceased woman possibly linked to the notebook, are disrupted by a mysterious force. Though the anime trims some layers present in the web novel, the core narrative is still effectively maintained. Klein’s reactions, subtle facial expressions, and his emotional restraint during tense moments help convey the gravity of the situation without overexplaining.
The series also introduces the concept of Sealed Artifacts, particularly the Grade 2 049 artifact brought to Tingen by Aiur Harson, Borgia, and Daly Simone. The anime adaptation does a commendable job of presenting this artifact in a way that feels both eerie and slightly humorous. The scene in which the artifact is activated is especially memorable due to the genuine reactions from Klein Moretti, who finds Aiur's ceremonial instructions slightly cringey, a detail that fans of the web novel will recognize with a smile.
Another commendable moment is the addition of Daly Simone in the climactic fight, a decision that deviates from the web novel. Her presence brings more energy to the already intense battle sequence, which sees the Nighthawks clashing with a corrupted version of Ray Bieber, now fused with the dangerous notebook. The visuals during this battle are crisp and cinematic, maintaining tension without overindulging in action tropes.
The symbolic and psychological tone reaches its peak when Klein confronts the Clown. This sequence is handled with narrative precision, especially the way Klein is surrounded by a haunting echo of laughter and transported briefly to the Gray Fog. These transitions not only amplify the surreal nature of his powers but also hint at the deeper psychological changes he is undergoing. The anime ends on a powerful visual beat with the emergence of a demonic entity from Azik’s shadow, leaving viewers with a tantalizing sense of dread and anticipation.
From a technical perspective, Episode 3 surpasses its predecessors. The animation has improved significantly, especially in the action choreography and facial animations. Voice acting remains strong across the board, helping to carry the emotional intensity of the plot. The music is understated yet effective, especially during Klein’s Divination attempts and the artifact scenes.
The episode also accomplishes something subtle but essential. It finally allows Klein Moretti’s character to shine. His mix of awkward charm, moral conflict, and growing strength makes him more relatable and grounded. Episode 3 does not just move the plot forward. It takes time to reflect on how Klein processes these strange and often horrifying events. This is where the episode finds its emotional core.
While there are still cuts from the original material, this episode shows the studio's ability to adapt wisely. It balances exposition with action, introduces lore without overwhelming the viewer, and centers its emotional payoff around character development rather than flashy combat. If this approach continues, Lord of Mysteries could shape up to be one of the most thoughtful and intriguing adaptations in recent anime.
