Anime Adaptation Brings Stage Play to Life
Following the announcement earlier this week, fans of the Tachikawa Jinsuke quadrilogy received their first look at the anime adaptation of Inherit the Winds through a new trailer. The original stage plays, performed since 1996 by the Caramel Box theatre group, focus on Jinsuke Tachikawa, a fictional soldier of the Shinsengumi during the tumultuous period surrounding the Meiji Restoration. This first story introduces Tachikawa as he enters the war, grappling with the aftermath of the Kinmon incident.
Main Cast Confirmed
The trailer also introduced the voice cast bringing these historical characters to life. Daisuke Sakuma of Snow Man voices Jin Tachikawa, the central figure of the narrative. Yuki Kaji, best known for his role as Eren Jaeger in Attack on Titan, will voice Soji Okita. Completing the trio, Aoi Yuki, the voice of Tsuyu Asui in My Hero Academia, takes on the role of Hyougo Koganei.
Manga Adaptation Announced
In addition to the anime, the project will also branch into a lighthearted web manga. Matsuri Muramatsu, artist of Hedgehog Harry, will create a four-panel comedy spin-off following the characters’ daily lives. This manga will run on the Twi4 platform beginning next year, offering fans an alternative perspective on the story’s cast.
Production Staff and Creative Vision
The anime will be directed by Tomohiro Kawamura at Live2D Creative Studio and Drive Inc. Yutaka Narui, one of the original playwrights, returns to write the script, ensuring faithfulness to the play’s narrative roots. Character designs will be overseen by Fumi Ebina, while Shigeru Kishiba will handle the musical score. Together, the creative team aims to adapt the essence of the beloved stage plays for a new audience while expanding the franchise into new formats.
A Cultural Legacy Reimagined
With its rich historical setting and dramatic storytelling, Inherit the Winds stands poised to capture both longtime fans of the plays and newcomers discovering Jinsuke Tachikawa’s journey for the first time. The combination of anime and manga adaptations marks an exciting evolution for the series, bridging theater, comics, and animation.
