A New Era for GATE
The original GATE anime aired from July 2015 to March 2016 with 24 episodes and adapted Takumi Yanai’s popular fantasy novel series. Now, to celebrate the anime’s 10th anniversary, GATE 2: Tides of Conflict brings fans deeper into the Special Region with a brand-new story set on the seas.
The newly released teaser visual highlights two central characters — Hajime Tokushima, a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force officer, and Princess Primera Luna Avion. Their partnership will shape the heart of this maritime-centered sequel.
Story and Setting
GATE 2 adapts Takumi Yanai’s sequel novel series, “Thus the Japanese Self-Defense Force Fought in Their Sea.” The story picks up years after the first Gate opened in Tokyo, with Japan maintaining tight control of the passage. While the JSDF continues to explore the Special Region, the JMSDF patrols its seas, facing new threats and challenges.
Former chef turned Petty Officer Hajime Tokushima finds himself aboard the submarine Kitashio under Captain Edajima. Their mission: infiltrate Tinae to rescue an abducted journalist. Along the way, Tokushima allies with Princess Primera, the pirate heir Shura no Arch, and the mystical guardian ship Odette Ze Nebula. Together, they must navigate treacherous waters filled with pirate fleets, raging wars, and monstrous sea creatures.
Production Team
The sequel is directed by Toru Takahashi (Inari Kon Kon) at Studio M2. Returning from the first series are Tatsuhiko Urahata, who handles series composition and scripts, and Shigeru Fujita, who oversees character designs. The combination of fresh direction and veteran staff promises to deliver both new perspectives and faithful continuity.

While the release date has not been confirmed, excitement is already building as fans look forward to revisiting the unique blend of modern military might and classic fantasy adventure that made the original GATE a hit.
