A Festival for Anime and Film Fans
Beyond Fest 2025 is set to host some of the most exciting premieres for anime and genre films this fall. Among its highlights, the U.S. premiere of 100 Meters and the U.S. West Coast premiere of the Angel’s Egg 4K remaster will take place on October 5. Fans attending the festival will be treated to a rare celebration of both contemporary anime storytelling and the revival of an iconic masterpiece from the 1980s.
100 Meters Hits the Track
Based on Uoto’s manga Hyakuemu, 100 Meters tells the story of Togashi, a naturally gifted runner, and Komiya, a determined but technically lacking transfer student. Their chance meeting as children shapes a lifelong rivalry that culminates in their adult years on the track. Starring Tori Matsuzaka as Togashi and Shōta Sometani as Komiya, the film explores themes of talent, persistence, and the bonds forged through competition.
The film is directed by Kenji Iwaisawa (ON-GAKU: Our Sound) at Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain, with a screenplay by Yasuyuki Mutō (Tokyo Revengers). Keisuke Kojima provides character design, while Hiroaki Tsutsumi composes the soundtrack. The movie’s theme song “Rashisa” is performed by the chart-topping band Official HiGE DANdism. After its world premiere at Annecy, the U.S. premiere in Los Angeles will be followed by nationwide screenings in mid-October.
Angel’s Egg Returns in 4K
Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s cult classic Angel’s Egg is receiving new life with a 4K remaster. First released in 1985, the film is widely regarded as a haunting and poetic work that blends Oshii’s visionary direction with Amano’s stunning art design. Known for its surreal storytelling and symbolic imagery, Angel’s Egg has influenced generations of filmmakers and artists.
The remaster is based on a newly scanned 35mm negative, ensuring that the film’s ethereal visuals can be experienced in their full glory. After premiering earlier this year at Cannes and the New York Film Festival, the Los Angeles screening marks the West Coast debut. GKIDS will distribute the film in North America beginning November 19, making it more accessible to fans than ever before.
A Rare Double Celebration
The inclusion of both 100 Meters and Angel’s Egg at Beyond Fest reflects the wide spectrum of anime’s artistry, from modern sports drama to experimental surrealism. While one showcases the intensity of human rivalry, the other remains a meditative classic that asks timeless questions about existence and faith. Together, they highlight the diversity and enduring impact of anime as a medium.
